Regional Identity: Existing Product Analysis

Existing Product Analysis: Margaret Thatcher: The Rise Of The Iron Lady | This Lady's Not For Turning | Timeline This is a very good documentary detailing the rise to power of Margaret Thatcher. In terms of framing - the host is centre frame when addressing the audience. In having himself in the centre, he has positioned himself as the focal point of the image. Positioning yourself in the centre of the frame conveys the connotation of authority, which is useful when the person in the frame is the host, who will be delivering information so the audience needs to trust him in order for the documentary to satisfy the code, "educate". In terms of shot type, a medium close up has been used. These framing techniques I find to be very effective and is perhaps something I could use in my own documentary. This documentary also uses archival footage which is something I wish to do. Using archival footage is integral to any documentary film that is discussing the past to a great len

Regional Identity: Primary Research

I conducted some research with a select amount of people.   I asked the age to get a gauge of whom is precipitating in the survey. This data is also useful in terms of demographic segmentation. 81.3% of participants were aged 16 - 19, the biggest set in the set age range of 16-25. This has helped me develop an understanding of what these young people think. I ask this question to also further my audience profile. Understanding social grade is integral to profiling an audience. Given that 81.3% of people said that they are working class, this is a good indicator that a vast amount of my audience will be working class. This is good as working class people between the ages of 16 and 25 are my target audience. One of the most fundamental conventions of a documentary is to educate. This is an important question as it exposes a lack of knowledge on the behalf of the viewer. It is apparent from this chart that a vast amount of people, 31.3%, are unaware of Sunderland's history in shipbuil

Regional Identity: Secondary Research

Introduction: It is important to have a statistical basis for my documentary - as it helps rationalize my talking points as well as helping solidify and quantify the talking points in the minds of the viewer.  Statistics regarding child poverty in the North East: The North East has the second highest rate of child poverty in the United Kingdom at 37% with London being the highest at a shocking 38%. However the North East saw the UK’s biggest increase in child poverty from 2014 to 2020 with a rise from 26% of children living in abject poverty to 37%. This is remarkably shocking as child poverty in the North East has increased from just below the UK average to the second highest of any region in that time. All 12 North East councils are included in the 20 UK local authority areas which saw the highest increases in child poverty from 2014/15 to 2019/20 - indeed all 12 top this list  Of the 20 UK Parliamentary constituencies which saw the highest increases in child poverty from 2014/15 to

Regional identity: Rationale Feedback and Revised Pitch

Image
Proceeding my presentation that I gave to my class regarding my pitch, I created a Google Form to receive feedback from my peers. Feedback is effective and making a product more suitable to a consumers needs.  Question: What is good about this pitch? I feel like these responses worked to reinforce my stance on the topical matter of my documentary, being based on North East lifestyle, as this appeals the most to my target demographic. Question: What can be improved? I feel like this response is valid, in the sense of working class jobs being the topical focus. I believe many young people aged 16 - 25 in the UK are still in education. I feel like basing the documentary on their experience with education is more relevant to the life of a 16 to 25 year old and is engaging. Revised Pitch: I am making a documentary about how education has been shaped in the North East. This further appeals to the psychographic type of the explorer.

Regional Identity: Pitch and Rationale

Image
Introduction: What is a pitch? A movie pitch is when a screenwriter presents an idea for a feature film to people who can help finance or produce it, in hopes of securing money to write the first draft. The pitch process is meant to intrigue the people who can help make a movie—either studio executives, distributors, producers, or directors—to sign onto the project. A movie pitch can be a verbal or a visual presentation of a writer’s big idea, usually preceding the writing of a draft of the film. Film pitches are useful tools that briefly convey the important elements of a film project, like premise, characters, plot, and budget. Types of Pitch: Standard pitch : The standard pitch is a rehearsed, scheduled pitch in which the screenwriter relays their movie idea to a group of investors or production executives. In some cases, the executives may ask the creator to make a  pitch deck  to accompany their verbal presentation to help expand upon the screenwriter’s vision for the fim. These

Regional Identity: Audience Profling

Image
Introduction: Understanding your audience is integral in the pre-production of a documentary, as having the audiences viewing tendencies in mind helps a filmmaker better tailor their product to be more appealing for the given target audience. Different segmentations have different interests, meaning that subject matter and media format preferences differ between age groups. It is important that your product is advertised to the correct demographic, to maximise its potential in making revenue. This means you are more likely to make back the budget thus satisfying the financial expectations of the client. What does the brief say about the audience? As stated by the brief, our audience is "young people from the ages of 16-25" .  This is useful information going forward. With this in mind, I will research the viewing tendencies and interests of people aged 16 to 25. I can also infer from the brief that my audience are people who live in the North East of England. This helps me fu
